Ava
She didnât know why, but she was uncomfortable. Exceedingly so. Nerves pushed through her gut, igniting pockets of fear like a fire crackling over dead wood.
She sat on the edge of her bed, one hand pushed hard into her chest, fingers clutched tight around the fabric of her tunic.
She⦠didnât know why she felt this way.
It had started about 20 minutes ago.
This overpowering fear, this dread that someone she cared about was in trouble.
But who?
Was it her people? Was she still somehow so attached to them despite the fact she was halfway across the galaxy?
Or was this just latent fear? Was she overreacting? Should she finally push that doubt from her mind and trust the Prince just as Hunter kept begging her to do?
It was at that exact moment that her door opened.
She was starting to get used to the fact that nobody knocked.
In walked Hunter.
Instantly she dropped her hand and jumped to her feet, relief washing over her face. âHunter,â she said in a shaking tone, âIâm so glad youâre okay.â
He tilted his head to the side. âWhy would I not be okay?â
âI⦠never mind.â She brought a hand up and clutched her chest once more, dropping her gaze to the floor.
Hunter appeared to consider her for a few more seconds. Then he pushed closer, head tilting towards her left armlet.
He seemed fascinated by it these days. Whenever he came to see her â which wasnât very often â he always talked of her armlet. He always reminded her that the Prince was trying his hardest to find a way to take it off. That it was very important that they had to find a way to take it off.
That if they didnât, it would end up killing Ava.
She shook her head as that confusing thought tumbled through her mind.
Hunter brushed past her, locked a hand on her wrist, and pulled back her left sleeve, looking at her arm once more.
He didnât ask, didnât warn her of what he was doing.
She was keenly aware that a few days ago, she would have tingled at his touch. Expectant pleasant shivers would have raced through her heart.
Now she couldnât help but lock her wide eyes on him and wonder what had happened.
⦠Or maybe she knew what had happened. Hunter had become so focused on the lost star. He counted down every day it would take to reach it.
He talked of nothing else but the star and her armlet.
The Hunter she had grown to⦠almost love seemed gone somehow.
âWeâre close, close,â Hunter suddenly mumbled.
âTo finding a way to remove my armlet?â she asked, even though she knew the answer.
âYes. Of course. You donât have to fear, Ava.â He twisted his helmet towards her.
Sheâd asked him to take it off again. If they could trust the Prince so freely, why did Hunter have to swan around in his armor?
But Hunter always came up with some new excuse to keep it on.
âYou donât have to fear for your safety,â he added.
âBecause I can trust the Prince,â she said automatically.
